Examining Sound Pollution at Sadr Highway by Using GIS

Sound is one of the major harmful factors in big cities which has put urban life under great stakes. Among the most important sources of causing this type of pollution is traffic and transportation of vehicles which are considered linear sound pollution.

Abstract

Sound is one of the major harmful factors in big cities which has put urban life under great stakes. Among the most important sources of causing this type of pollution is traffic and transportation of vehicles which are considered linear sound pollution.
The city of Tehran has been recognized as one of the world's most populous cities with less capacity compared to the high number of its population and irregular increase in the number of vehicles. Therefore, conducting a research in this area seemed necessary.
In the present research with regard to application priorities of the surrounding area where the research was conducted (Sadr Highway), 82 stations were selected in order to measure the extent of sound pollution. Also the balance amount equivalent to sound pressure (db) in the weight network A in the two intervals of day and night and at the intervals of 0.5, 20 and 40 meters of the highway was measured.
Results showed that the average equal balance of the day was not much different from average equal balance of the night. Therefore, subsequent measurement of sound pressure balance (Lmin (db)) and (Lmax (db, db)) in the day and in the weight network A were measured in all stations. Also, the average balance was equal to 24 db more than what has been defined by the Department of Environment for residential areas around the highway. Then, with regard to the measured sound pressure around the highway, statistical balances and indicators for the highway sound were computed.
Meanwhile, in this research study, the three-dimensional location analysis models in GIS environment were used and the process of dissemination of sound pollution in the highway and its extent was shown by using interpolation method on the map for making analysis and reaching conclusion. Finally, according to the results obtained recommendations were presented on how to reduce sound pollution as well as apply proper engineering methods in reducing improper impacts of such pollution.
