Evaluation and Rating of Urban Green Areas (Case Study: District 20 of Tehran Municipality)

Abstract

The present research examines evaluation and rating of urban green areas (case study: District 20 of Tehran Municipality). The span of the city of Tehran over the past two centuries has increased from about five kilometers to 750 square kilometers. In other words, the city has become bigger 150 times and its population has increased from 15,000 to over 10 million people – a growth of over 600 times.
Development of urban green areas in Tehran has enjoyed an upward trend to such an extent that parks, at neighborhood, local and district levels, have increased. But the noticeable point is the improper distribution of public green areas and their quality throughout Tehran so that districts 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 17 are suffering from poor green space per capita. The trend of the expansion of Tehran green area from 1369 (1990-91) to 1380 (2000-2001) is about 11431 hectares. The number of parks increased from 50 with a total area of 4.408 hectares in 1354 (1975-76) to 915 with a total area of 1,298.6 hectares in 1381 (2002-2003).
The trend of expansion of forest plantation from 1357 (1978-79) up to 1366 (1987-88) has been downward and since then to 1381 (2002-2003) has been upward. In an effort to gain access to a sustainable city, there is need to identify and strengthen sustainability indicators in cities, including quality and quantity of urban green areas. To this end, one of the methods is sound and principled evaluation and rating in conformity with social-oriented and technocracy demands.  
In line with this, studies have been conducted on quantitative and qualitative conditions of urban green areas in District 20 of Tehran Municipality on the basis of Numerical Taxonomy Model.
