Mayor Reports on Public Transportation Issues Mayor Reports on Public Transportation Issues

The 13 th  International conference on Traffic and Transportation Engineering was held at the Milad Tower of Tehran in the presence of experts, urban managers and the mayor of Tehran.

The Tehran mayor stressed at the session: “All our concerns and interests are focused on gaining knowledge for the improvement of human lives and if this conference fails to achieve this goal we have not been successful in our efforts.”

According to Shahrnevesht, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf who was addressing the participants in the conference said improvement of living quality in cities and metropolises is the main target behind holding such scientific conferences and to this end public transportation is the major issue that has affected cities and large cities. “The most important challenge of our city is air and sound pollution and it is natural that in order to get rid of this challenge we should take our decisions in a way that social, economic and environmental dimensions of transportation would be taken into consideration.”

Ghalibaf added: “According to statistics we have about 140 to 150 days of clean air in the year. Today the number of clean days is not as much as the number of fingers in our hands but through hard work and cooperation I promise you that after a period of five years we could double the number of clean days in a year.”

He added: “Today development of pavements has become a public culture and the public are asking for new pavements in the city. Today large capacities have been provided in Tehran transportation. During the past eight years some 12 to 14 km of metro were built but today I assure you that the engineering capability of the country has provided an opportunity that in the city of Tehran 30 km of metro could be built per year and all the required designs, facilities, engineering tools and manpower are ready for this purpose.”
