Tehran hit a new record in 2010 in terms of air pollution and this was the time when the need for public transportation such as subway was felt the most. New hopes have arisen in early months of the new year.

Rooznevesht website wrote that 12 double-deck cars and four electrical locomotives will be added to the subway fleet this year.

Development of subway has been a priority in big cities like Tehran for many years, but there were concerns that shortage of cars and locomotives may cause problems especially when Kahrizak and Tajrish stations were made operational.

Based on current plans, subway lines will be increased by 15 km by the end of the current Tehran calendar year (started March 21, 2011) and 14 stations will be added.

Habil Darvishi, managing director of Tehran and Suburbs Subway Company announced that 294 cars will be added before the year-end.

Darvishi also stated that 85 new cars will be discharged from customs next year including 49 single and 36 double-deck cars. They will enter subway fleet after preparatory measures are taken.

Darvishi stated that 3 million passengers will be transferred by subway by the year-end and new cars will be added to accommodate more passengers.
