An agreement has been signed between Tehran Municipality and UN Habitat as the beginning of a new chapter in urban management in Tehran. The agreement will help other regional cities to use Tehran Municipality’s experiences and will turn Tehran into a hub of management science and skills.


Tehran SAMA quoted Namdar Sedaqat, Tehran Municipality’s director general for public and international affairs, as saying that according to the agreement, a regional center for educating local governance and urban management will be launched by Tehran Municipality. It will be supported by the UN Habitat to promote good governance and urban management in the Middle East and West Asia.

The official added that confirming Tehran observatory standards is another item of the agreement. He added that the UN Habitat will provide technical and specialized assistance to Tehran Municipality and will organize an international festival of urban management with the main focus on research and innovation. He added that in cooperation with the UN Habitat, this local experience will become an international experience which is supported by the United Nations.

Another article of the agreement calls for sharing of experiences gained in recent years through “world cities statement” which is issued annually by the United Nations. Tehran Municipality will also have access to an urban trade database which can be also used by other Iranian cities. Tehran has been also chosen as the host of the UN Habitat meeting of 2012, which is themed “urban energy and sustainability.”

Eduardo Moreno Lopez, Head of Research and capacity Development Branch of the UN Habitat as well as Namdar Sedaqat signed the agreement in an official ceremony.
