According to Tehran SAMA, Director of the Citizenship Training and Participation Departments of District 1 of Tehran Municipality, Niloufar Qassemi Vash, said: “The purpose behind implementation of this program is to teach citizens change in consumption patterns and reduce use of bags, plastic disposable containers and products and replace them with recyclable non-plastic materials. On Nylex Free Day in this district over five thousand bags would replace nylex bags. This program is for preservation of the environment and teaching how use of plastic substances could be harmful."
Qassemi Vash further remarked that on the Nylex Free Day which would be observed on Wednesday 11 July, the bags would be distributed among citizens and the required training would be given for upgrading their awareness through face to face, musical performance, training of school mayors, educational theaters, painting competitions for children, distribution of brochures, etc. “It is expected that through transfer of knowledge and training in future months with the participation, cooperation and collaboration of trained citizens statistics on consumption of plastic materials in the district would be reduced.”
According to expert studies over 177 thousand tons of plastics are produced in Iran annually which is equal to 500 tons per day. By not using one plastic bag per week by every Iranian household consumption of about 816 million plastic bags would be avoided per year.
