According to Tehran SAMA, Jaafar Tashakori Hashemi, Transportation and Traffic Deputy of Tehran Municipality said: “Increasing speed of vehicles cause reduction of safety of drivers and passengers of motor vehicles as well as pedestrians to such an extent that currently car and road accidents have been turned into a social and economic problem in the world. There are different reasons for car accidents on streets and in suburban areas, but speed is one of the most important factors, he said, adding that reducing traffic speed of vehicles and improving safety conditions of streets are essential for the same reason.
Tashakori Hashemi stressed that employment of speed reduction standards on streets is necessary. “In order to compile comprehensive standards for speed reduction, first standards and regulations for application of the procedure in progressive countries were studied. After surveying the process for implementation of reducing measures in Iran, those cases were compared. The standards for categorizing urban streets have also been determined. In this standardization, regulations and characteristics of categorizing streets and their physical, technical and traffic features have been compiled. On this basis, the process of managing these streets, reducing impacts of traffic and creating instruments for identification of traffic performances have also been determined. Meanwhile, marginal parks, how pedestrians should pass through streets, concentration of traffic boards, riding bicycles and establishing special bus lines are among other topics which have been specified in this standard.
The traffic speed reduction standards on city streets have been approved by the National Standard Organization of Iran under the national code number 14 237. Also, the standard for categorizing urban streets had previously been approved by the National Committee for Engineering of Construction and Building Materials.
