We have always heard that cycling is good. But what does it really mean to be good? And what facilities does it need?
Imagine city managers being able to convince citizens to use bicycles instead of private cars or public transportation; In this case, what infrastructure is needed and what services should they provide to the citizens?
Tehran Municipality is one of the urban management complexes in the world that intends to provide facilities for its citizens to use bicycles to cross the city. But a densely populated city like Tehran, which is both very crowded and has citizens living in different cultures and perspectives; faces certain difficulties and obstacles to promote cycling. In addition to providing urban and security infrastructures, it must make great efforts to create a culture and accept cycling as one of the ways of traveling in the city. Some citizens are accustomed to traveling by private car, others prefer to use public transportation, and very few dare to change the public habit of society and ride bicycles.
Therefore, the municipality of Tehran, and especially Dr. Pirooz Hanachi, the mayor of Tehran, as the pioneers of cycling, implemented the “car-free Tuesdays” plan, and on Tuesdays every week, they go to work by public transport and also by bicycle. Tehran Municipality intends to use all facilities and tools to make Tehran a clean, dynamic and safe city for citizens. Promoting cycling is one of these solutions to keep the air clean, reduce traffic and make citizens more active in sports.
Some of the main streets of Tehran, where there is a lot of daily traffic, have special cycling routes and citizens can ride their bicycles on these routes. Tehran Municipality has provided facilities for those who do not have a personal bicycle or can not or do not always have to bring their bicycles with them. Public bicycles are rented to citizens in special squares and stations throughout the city. Citizens can easily borrow these bikes from the municipality and return the bikes after their trip is over.
Soon we will see Tehran as a green and clean city with many cyclists who guarantee both their own health and the cleanliness of the air and the environment.
