Tehran Golden Adobe World Award is an international event that is held in the form of identifying and introducing the best urban experiences in the world and with the presence of various domestic and foreign cities and participation of international organizations.
The trend of urbanization of communities is growing rapidly. Cities today face serious demographic, economic, social and environmental challenges at the local, national, regional and global levels, which necessitates the existence of effective and efficient planning to deal with the consequences of urban change in different societies. Accordingly, the actors of the international community must strengthen their cooperation in various aspects of the city and work together on fundamental and important urban affairs and interact on urban infrastructure, urban management, urban services, etc.
In order to achieve this vision, in 2013, the UN General Assembly, on the proposal of the Economic & Investment Committee and designated October 31 the World Cities Day to be commemorated each year and communicated the event to all UN member states, affiliated international organizations, civil society and all relevant stakeholders. In this regard, the United Nations has designated and introduced the Human Settlement Program (UN-HABITAT) as the axis and coordinator of World Cities Day programs. The Tehran Golden Adobe Global Award has been held on the basis of this cooperation between the Tehran Municipality Communication and International Affairs Center and the UN HABITAT since 2014.
This international evet was held as Tehran Golden Adobe on 31 October 2014 for the first time by Tehran Municipality, in cooperation with UN-Habitat. Golden Adobe Award is supposed to be a focal point where cities of the world gather and present their projects and will be appreciated.
Golden Adobe Award is open for all cities to partake; and projects will be evaluated based on a set of criteria such as resilience, eco-friendliness, innovation, et cetera. Of course, there are some preconditions for projects to enter the Award, a few of which is for the project to have been applied and consummated within the confines of a city; to be related to one of the axes of the event, less than 5 years since completion and exploitation. Also, each year projects are submitted according to the axes introduced by the Award. Aforementioned axes of the fifth edition are as follows:
- Smart city
- Human-oriented urban planning
- Providing resources for investment, entrepreneurship, employment and urban economy
- Local governance, urban planning and management
- Sustainable urban resilience and development
- Development of infrastructure, public transportation and urban services
- Crisis, health and urban health
- Peace and urban management
Commencement of this year’s call is 22 September 2020 and the end date of submission is 5 November 2020. The submission procedure is online and related documents are to be uploaded in Tehran Golden Adobe official website. There is going to be some programs implemented on the side of the main program, some of which are: holding scientific workshops and specialized forums according to the latest international developments in the field of “peace and urban management” and “health, collaboration with successful urban startups for the first time, holding a joint meeting with TED-x in Tehran, etc.
This year’s Award goes under the banner of Peace & Health, which are, with COVID-19 crisis at hand, most relevant issues to be addressed. There are few, if any, to claim to have not been hit hard by COVID-19, and even less not worried about future. Golden Adobe Award brings together ideas put forth by companies from different cities to, if not any, prepare grounds to face the challenges of the kinds of cities we need to build to be able to confront future crises in more resilient ways. This will not come true unless there’s a call to unity; a unity that provides shared solutions for shared difficulties; a unity characterized by a vision of global peace and health; and, at last, a unity symbolized by conglomerations as such.
