Pirouz Hanachi, the Mayor of Tehran conveyed his deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the loss of Kadir Topbaş, former Mayor of Istanbul and President of the World Organization of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG).
The sudden loss of Dr. Kadir Topbaş, a beloved and profound thinker and architect, due to coronavirus-related complications, has caused me deep regret and pain.
My sincerest condolences to the good citizens of Istanbul and the people of our friendly and neighbouring country, Turkey, as well as to Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu, the esteemed Mayor of Istanbul on the passing of Dr. Kadir Topbaş.
As an architect, popular and active Mayor, he demonstrated a worthy effort to improve the quality of urban life and aimed to promote the global position of Istanbul during his three periods of service by direct selection of citizens. The late Dr. Topbaş also played a unique role in supporting urban diplomacy and developing a network of cooperation between cities around the world and the region. He had a great interest and attachment to the Iranian culture, history, civilization and literature and traveled to Tehran several times to strengthen the ties of friendship between the cities and the people of the two neighbouring countries.
"May the Almighty rest his noble soul in peace and he will be cherished in our memories forever."
