The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is a United Nations observance, celebrated each year on 17 June, purpose of which is to raise public awareness of the presence of desertification and drought, highlighting methods of preventing desertification and recovering from drought, and also pointing out the direct effects it has on our daily life.
Common conception might be that desertification and drought should not be a concern to modern, societal life but since about 99 percent of caloric intake of a healthy person is derived from earth; a well-fortified land is a strong defense against natural disasters such as flood; and since life itself requires the support of ecological services given by earth; the only sensible conclusion could be arrived at is to realize that whoever lives on earth is dependable on it. Management of a sustainable earth is a universal task on individual shoulders to be carried on!
This year’s observance of the day to combat desertification and drought focuses on transforming damaged lands to healthy ones. Revivification of damaged lands brings about economic flexibility, job vacancies, higher incomes and higher food security. It improves biodiversity which, in return, can lower the effects of climate change and be a foundation for a green recovery from the pandemic.
On the side-lines of the conference comprised of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Executive Secretary of the UNCCD, Ibrahim Tiao, said: “Entering the United Nations’ Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, we have a real opportunity to better restore from Covid-19. If countries can revive about 800 million hectares of the damaged lands they have promised to rebuild until the year 2030, we can save humanity and our planet from danger.”
In 2021, the goal of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is to show that to invest in undamaged land as part of a green recovery is a smart decision. This day is a unique moment to remind everyone that to reverse damaging the earth by problem solving, strong social participation and cooperation on all levels is a possibility at hand.
