District 7, a Location with Neighborhood Identity

District 7 of Tehran Municipality is an area in the center of the capital. This district with a span of 1,536,800 square meters ranks 15 among Tehran municipal districts in terms of vastness. Statistics show that approximately 308,445 people are living in this district which constitutes 4.4 % of the entire population of metropolitan Tehran. Famous neighborhoods such as Gorgan, Nezamabad, Eshratabad and Andisheh which are the old neighborhoods of Tehran with traditional and historical texture are located in this district. Parts of the old avenue called Shariati are also located in this part of the capital.

Urban Characteristics

District 7 which is located in the heart of Tehran has five areas and 16 neighborhoods. This district is limited to Districts 3 and 4 in ​​the north, to District 8 in the east, to District 6 and to Districts 12 and 13 of Tehran Municipality in the south.

Its northern border is Ressalat Highway, its eastern border is Sabalan Street and southern part of Majidiyeh Street (Ostad Hassan Banna), its southern border is Enqelab and Damavad streets and its western border is Modarres Highway and Shahid Dr. Mofatteh Street.

Shariati Avenue divides District 7 into two western and eastern parts each with different physical features. In the eastern side we are faced with fine-grained soil separation and dense texture and incomplete and inefficient network. In the western part we see a regular and coarse-grained separation network wherein change in application from residential to administrative and commercial has been tangible in the recent decade.


Political and Historical Characteristics

About 100 years ago, District 7 of Tehran was considered part of the hunting area of old Tehran and Shemiran. The access roads to the area was through Shemiran Road (Shariati Avenue) which used to be a connection route between the city and the summer resort area which started from Shemiran Gate and after passing through Shemiran area would turn to Tajrish.

Numerous gardens and summerhouses were created around Shemiran Road among which Eshratabad establishment and Qajar Palace could be cited. This palace was turned into a prison at the time of Reza Shah and later changed its application into a garrison. Currently Tehran Municipality has taken basic measures to change the application of the palace into a large park with cultural facilities.

Since 1340s (1960s) onwards the district has made growing expansion and in the calendar year 1357 (1978-79) District 7 was completely turned into an urban residential fabric with social-physical difference on both sides of the old Shemiran (Shariati Avenue). This residential texture on the southern and western sides has been merged into the central core of the city due to its expansion.


Cultural-Social Characteristics

District 7 is considered the district of old neighborhoods of Tehran which took shape within the core of Tehran about 100 years ago. Currently many cultural groups of Tehran are living in this area. Being located in the central part of Tehran, the district has easy access to the northern and southern parts of the city. Seyyed Khandan Bridge is one of the bridges in Tehran which provides for gaining access to other parts of the city. Shemiran Bridge is another old and famous bridge in Tehran which is located in this district and paves the way for gaining access to the southern part of Tehran.

Many academic centers are also located in this district such as Allameh Tabatabai University's School of Social Sciences, which is one of the important academic centers in the Middle East. Arasbaran Culture House, Andisheh Culture House, Quran House, Farhang House and the City Photography Studio ... are among other cultural centers of the district. Abbasi Museum is one of the most important museums in Iran which is located in this district.

District 7 houses the highest concentration of restaurants and cafés in Tehran. House of Artists, Kafka Cafe, Cafe Remnes, Black and White Café as well as Baba Bozorg (Grandpa) Tea House, Bagh-e Saba Tea House, etc. and a large number of hotels and restaurants which have many attractions for backpack tourists.

In terms of medical services the district is equipped with special facilities such as Pasargad, Arad, Sajjad, and Iranshahr hospitals.
